The Eclogues are Virgil's version of the Idylls of Theocritus, a bunch of short scenes that feature shepherds doing shepherd stuff, like talking about love, and falling in love, and having free style singing battles with pipe breakdowns in competition over some cool cups and personal pride. Virgil (70-19 BCE) was a poet of immense virtuosity and influence. His Eclogues deal with bucolic life and love, his Georgics with tillage, trees, cattle, and bees.

Bucolica (n. pl., ab adiectivo Graeco βουκολικός 'pastoralis') sunt primum ex tribus Vergilii poetae maioribus operibus, inter annos fere 42 et 39 a.C.n. compositum. Bucolica ex decem constat poëmatibus pastoralibus, quae eclogae (Graece: ἐκλογή 'selectio') nuncupantur, ex quo fit, ut Bucolicorum libri etiam Eclogae appellentur. Vergílius napísal spolu tri básnické skladby: Bucolica (Bukoliky, piesne s pastierskou tematikou), Georgica (Georgiky, básne s roľníckou tematikou) a hrdinský epos Aineis (Enneida), ktorý sa stal národným rímskym eposom. Vergíliova tvorba a život si vyslúžili už v staroveku rad komentárov.
